Hand washing is one of the most basic things we do every single day. Multiple times a day. Which means whatever is in your hand soap is something you are being exposed to repeatedly whether you think about it or not.
I started paying attention to hand soap ingredients years ago and what I found in most conventional soaps — especially anything labeled antibacterial or antimicrobial — genuinely surprised me. Not because the ingredients were obscure but because they were the same ones showing up everywhere else I had already eliminated from my routine.
Ingredients to Avoid in Hand Soap
Triclosan is the big one. It was banned from hand soap by the FDA in 2016 specifically because it alters thyroid function and is linked to cancer. The problem is it still shows up in products not labeled as hand soap and sometimes still appears in products that should not have it. Always worth checking.
Parabens — methyl, propyl, ethyl, and butyl parabens — are hormone disruptors that show up as preservatives in many liquid soaps. We have covered these extensively in other posts and hand soap is no exception.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate is an endocrine disruptor linked to cancer that is commonly used as the primary cleaning agent in conventional liquid soap formulas.
Propylene Glycol and PEGs have been shown to cause cancer and are used in many conventional formulas as humectants and thickeners.
Fragrance is the legal loophole we keep coming back to. One word on a label that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals including neurotoxins and endocrine disruptors.
Phthalates are carcinogenic, cause endocrine disruption, and are linked to birth defects. Like fragrance they are often hidden rather than disclosed.
The good news is that clean hand soap has become genuinely easy to find. Here are the ones I use and trust.
The Brands I Actually Use
Attitude is EWG Verified and one of my two everyday hand soaps. I have been using Attitude products for years across multiple categories and their hand soap is no exception. The Red Vines scent is scented with fruit extracts and is genuinely lovely. The formula is made with worry-free ingredients, plant and mineral based, vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly. They plant a tree for every product ordered which I appreciate.
If you are already using Attitude for laundry or cleaning products this is an easy addition to the routine.
Pros: EWG Verified, plant based, fruit extract scenting, eco-friendly and sustainable packaging, vegan and cruelty-free, available on Amazon.
Cons: The scent selection is more limited than some other brands. If variety is important to you Everyone has more options.
This is my other everyday soap and has been a staple in my home for years. It is EWG Verified, made with coconut cleansers, and scented with essential oils. It comes in a wide variety of scents, applies smoothly without being thick or sticky, and just works consistently every single time. I also use their hand sanitizer at work and for my daughter.
Pros: EWG Verified, coconut based cleansers, essential oil scents, wide variety of scents available, not thick or sticky, available on Amazon.
Cons: Genuinely hard to find a complaint with this one. It is a reliable consistent product.
Aleavia Citrus and Sea Kelp Prebiotic Hand Wash
This one caught my attention because of the prebiotic angle and it delivered. The concept is that most hand soaps strip your skin's microbiome with every wash — the beneficial bacteria that act as your first line of defense. Aleavia uses prebiotics to nourish that microbiome rather than strip it which is a genuinely different approach to hand soap and one that makes a lot of sense from a skin health perspective.
The ingredient list is as clean as it gets: filtered water, coconut oil, orange peel oil, lemongrass oil, jojoba seed oil, shea butter, aloe vera powder, Dead Sea salt, Acadian sea kelp, and citric acid. That is it. The formula is 100% plant based, paraben and sulfate free, vegan, and never tested on animals. It leaves your hands silky without any dryness which is rare for hand soap.
One honest note: the hand wash is not currently in the EWG database. However when I checked the individual ingredients they all rate low hazard. The ingredient list is short, clean, and fully disclosed on their website which is exactly the kind of transparency I look for. Available on Amazon.
Pros: Prebiotic formula supports skin microbiome rather than stripping it, exceptionally clean and short ingredient list, leaves hands silky not dry, 100% plant based, paraben and sulfate free, available on Amazon.
Cons: Not yet in the EWG database as a complete product so you cannot pull a single verified score. Individual ingredients all rate clean when checked separately.
Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Liquid Soap
Alaffia is an EWG score 1 which is the best possible rating and one I reach for when I want something simple and affordable. The Moringa Leaf and Peppermint scent is fresh and clean without being overwhelming. Alaffia is a fair trade brand based around shea and African botanicals and their mission goes beyond just clean ingredients — they invest directly in West African communities through their cooperative model.
Pros: EWG score 1, fair trade, shea based formula, fresh peppermint scent, affordable, available on Amazon.
Cons: The scent is more subtle than some people prefer. If you want a stronger fragrance experience this may feel underwhelming.
Puracy Natural Liquid Hand Soap
If you have read my multipurpose cleaners post you already know I trust this brand. Their hand soap is just as solid as their cleaner. Puracy rates well on EWG, is made with plant based ingredients, and is free from sulfates, phosphates, dyes, and synthetic fragrance. The formula is gentle enough for the whole family including kids and sensitive skin.
The scent options are light and fresh — the Green Tea and Lime is a personal favorite and the same scent family as their cleaner so it feels cohesive throughout the house. It lathers well, rinses cleanly, and does not leave your hands feeling dry or stripped which is a real problem with a lot of conventional soaps.
Pros: EWG low hazard, plant based, sulfate and fragrance free, gentle for sensitive skin and kids, light fresh scent, does not dry out hands, available on Amazon.
Cons: Not EWG Verified — rates low hazard rather than carrying the full verification mark. Still a very clean formula but worth noting if EWG Verified is your hard line.
On My Radar
Branch Basics recently released a gel hand soap formula which addresses my original issue with their foam version — I found the foam required too many pumps and did not feel effective for removing makeup. I have not tried the gel yet but the brand's ingredient standards are among the highest I have seen and if it performs like their other products it is worth trying. Fragrance free as with all Branch Basics products. I will update this once I have tested it personally.
The Bottom Line
Attitude and Everyone are my daily go-tos and between the two of them I have never needed anything else for everyday hand washing. Dr. Bronner's is the pick if you want one versatile product that does multiple jobs. Aleavia is worth trying if you have dry or sensitive hands or if the microbiome angle interests you. Alaffia is the best budget friendly option that does not compromise on ingredients. And Puracy is the reliable plant based pick from a brand I trust across multiple product categories.
