The Truth About Multipurpose Cleaners: Are You Safeguarding Your Home Safely?

March marks 5 years since COVID-19 was first discovered in Minnesota, and even years later, we are still sanitizing like crazy. What are many of us doing to safeguard our environments? Cleaning! With sanitization STILL at an all-time high, it’s easy to reach for Lysol or Clorox wipes. But did you know there are safer alternatives that clean effectively without toxic chemicals?

The Hidden Dangers of Conventional Cleaners

Many household cleaners contain harmful chemicals that can negatively impact long-term lung health. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), 52% of household cleaning products contain ingredients that harm the lungs. Even using these cleaners just once a week can contribute to asthma.

Some of the most concerning ingredients include:

  • Formaldehyde – Used as a preservative in some products, this is a known carcinogen.
  • Chloroform – Found in bleach products, it’s also a known carcinogen.
  • Sodium Borate (Borax) – A common ingredient in cleaners that acts as a hormone disruptor.

The American Lung Association warns that many cleaning supplies release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and headaches. Common products that contain VOCs include aerosol sprays, air fresheners, bleach, dishwashing liquid, and furniture polish.
