The Honest Guide to Bug Spray for Families: DEET, Picaridin, and What Actually Works

Every summer the same debate plays out in clean living spaces online. Someone posts their favorite citronella candles, someone else swears by essential oil bracelets, and meanwhile mosquitoes are carrying diseases that put real people in the hospital every single year.

I live in Minnesota. I have a lake house in a heavily wooded area up north. I have a seven year old daughter. Bug spray is not a topic I approach lightly and it is not one where I lead with ingredients first.

This guide covers everything I researched when building out my bug spray series. What the CDC, EPA, EWG, AAP, and peer reviewed science actually say about the three main repellent categories, what works for yard control, and what I personally use for my family. I am not here to tell you what to choose. I am here to give you the honest information so you can decide for yourself.

Why Bug Spray Matters More Than Most People Realize

Mosquitoes and ticks are not just annoying. In the United States, and particularly in wooded humid states like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and the entire Northeast, they carry diseases that cause real and lasting harm.

The Minnesota Department of Health confirms that West Nile Virus is reported every single year across the state with no vaccine and no specific treatment. Prevention is the only defense. Eastern Equine Encephalitis, while rare, carries a fatality rate of approximately 30% among symptomatic cases with many survivors experiencing lasting neurological damage. Minnesota also ranks in the top 10 states nationwide for tick borne diseases including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis.

These are not worst case scenarios. They are active risks in heavily wooded and humid areas across the country.

That context matters when you are choosing what goes on your body and your child's body this summer.

DEET: What the Research Actually Says

DEET has been in use since 1957 and is the most studied insect repellent available. The CDC, EPA, AAP, and AAFP all recommend it as the most effective EPA registered repellent for mosquitoes and ticks.

What mainstream sources say: The CDC recommends 20 to 30% DEET for most situations. The American Academy of Pediatrics says products up to 30% DEET are safe for children over 2 months of age. In more than 60 years of use, few confirmed toxicity cases have been reported when used as directed.

What EWG and MADE SAFE flag: EWG recommends a maximum of 10% DEET for children ages 6 months to 12 years, following Health Canada guidance. For adults in high risk areas 20 to 30% is appropriate. For short lower risk exposure 7 to 10% is sufficient. MADE SAFE flags concerns about neurotoxicity and environmental toxicity, noting that most adverse events involve misuse at high concentrations or ingestion. Always use the lowest effective concentration for your situation.

The honest bottom line: DEET is effective and considered safe when used as directed by mainstream medical organizations. Stricter standards flag real concerns worth knowing about. I personally reserve DEET for high risk situations. At the lake house in heavily wooded areas during peak tick and mosquito season. For everyday use I reach for something else.

Picaridin: The Cleaner Middle Ground

Picaridin is the ingredient most people have not heard of but probably should be using. A 2018 systematic review found no meaningful difference in performance between Picaridin and DEET in field studies. The WHO states Picaridin demonstrates repellent properties comparable to and often superior to DEET.

Unlike DEET, Picaridin does not dissolve plastics or synthetic fabrics, is less likely to cause skin and eye irritation, and has a lower toxicity profile overall. The CDC, EPA, AAP, AAFP, and EWG all recommend it. That full range of agreement across mainstream and cleaner living sources is rare and worth noting.

EWG lists Picaridin as their top overall recommendation for most situations. It is EPA registered with validated safety and efficacy data making it a genuinely science backed cleaner alternative to DEET.

Products I have personally used: OFF! Family Care Picaridin and Sawyer Products 20% Picaridin. Both have worked well for me. One important note on OFF! Family Care: it comes in an aerosol format which I avoid for reasons covered below. Look for the pump spray or lotion format instead. Natrapel 20% Picaridin is another EWG recommended option worth knowing about.

Picaridin is my everyday go-to for moderate risk situations.

Essential Oils: When They Work and When They Do Not

Essential oils are appealing for obvious reasons. They are natural, they smell good, and they feel safer. The honest picture is more nuanced than most people realize.

EWG states directly that natural bug repellent ingredients like citronella, lemongrass, peppermint, cedar, clove, geraniol, rosemary and soybean oils are often not the best choice for disease prevention. The CDC does not recommend pure unformulated essential oils as standalone repellents. The NIH notes that plant based repellents are often perceived as safe but this is sometimes a misconception. Natural does not automatically mean effective.

The exception worth knowing about is Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. It is the only plant based repellent with EPA registration and CDC recommendation for adults and children over 3 years old. A 2023 peer reviewed study published in Scientific Reports, a Nature journal, found that clove oil and cinnamon oil at 10% concentration provided over one hour of complete protection from both mosquitoes and ticks. That is genuinely promising but one hour of protection has real limitations in high exposure environments.

When essential oils make sense for my family:

I live in Minnesota with a lake house in a heavily wooded area. Essential oils do not cut it for us in those high humidity high exposure situations. But there are low risk days where they are a reasonable choice. Think a dry weekday when my daughter is at school, no recent rain, low mosquito activity, short outdoor window. In those situations reaching for something lighter feels right to me.

The key distinction is matching the product to the actual risk level of the situation. A quick morning drop off on a dry sunny day is very different from an evening at the lake.

Products worth knowing about for low risk situations:

Cliganic Organic Bug Repellent Spray rates low hazard on EWG Skin Deep. Uses a blend of geraniol, lemongrass, peppermint and cedarwood. Light formula, not greasy.

Revive Essential Oil Bug Spray is another option I have tried personally. Light on the skin and a pleasant scent. Works fine for very low exposure situations.

Repel Plant Based Lemon Eucalyptus is the strongest plant based option available and the only one with EPA registration and CDC recommendation. If you want a plant based option with actual science behind it this is the one. Not recommended for children under 3.

Cliganic Bug Repellent Bracelets are what I put on my daughter for low risk days. One on each wrist and each ankle. They are not going to hold up in heavy mosquito conditions but for a dry low activity day they are a gentle option.

My honest experience: none of these worked reliably for me personally in Minnesota's humidity and heavy mosquito pressure. I get eaten alive. But your environment and your body chemistry may respond differently and for genuinely low risk situations they are a reasonable cleaner choice.

What to Stop Spending Money On

Before talking about yard control it is worth addressing the products that are heavily marketed but do not hold up to scrutiny.

Bug zappers: Academic studies confirm they are essentially ineffective against mosquitoes which are not attracted to UV light. They mostly kill beneficial insects. A University of Delaware study found less than a quarter of one percent of insects killed in zappers were actually biting insects.

Citronella candles: A peer reviewed study in the Journal of Medical Entomology found citronella candles had no meaningful effect on mosquito biting pressure. The scent disperses too quickly in open outdoor air.

Residential misting systems and lawn sprays: The EPA states that outdoor residential misting systems have not been studied sufficiently to document their effectiveness controlling mosquitoes and have not been scientifically proven to prevent West Nile Virus or other diseases. Widespread lawn pesticide treatments also carry unknown exposure risks for people, pets, bees and other beneficial insects.

Outdoor essential oil diffusers: No peer reviewed research supports outdoor diffusing as effective mosquito protection. Essential oils disperse immediately in open air at concentrations too low to have any repellent effect.

What Actually Works for Your Yard

Eliminate standing water. This is the single most evidence backed yard control method according to the CDC. Mosquitoes breed in as little as a bottle cap of water. Empty flower pots, bird baths, buckets, gutters, unused tires and any container that collects rain water. Do it consistently.

Mosquito Dunks in standing water you cannot empty. Mosquito Dunks contain Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), a naturally occurring soil bacterium that kills mosquito larvae before they become biting adults. EPA registered, WHO recognized as safe, and harmless to people, pets, fish, bees and beneficial insects. Float one in any standing water such as bird baths, rain barrels, ponds and gutters. Each dunk treats 100 square feet and lasts 30 days. Available at most hardware stores.

The Mosquito Dunk Bucket. This method is backed by Kansas State University Extension and has been written about in Popular Science. Fill a five gallon bucket two thirds full with water. Add a handful of grass clippings or leaves and let it ferment for three days. Then add one quarter of a Mosquito Dunk. Place the bucket in the shade away from where your family sits. The bucket attracts female mosquitoes to lay eggs in a controlled spot and the Bti kills all larvae before they become adults. Replace the dunk piece every 30 days. It sounds counterintuitive to attract mosquitoes but the point is to give them a controlled place to lay eggs so you can stop the life cycle before they ever bite anyone.

Cover up. Loose fitting long sleeved shirts and pants are CDC recommended. Simple, free, and effective especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Permethrin treated clothing. The CDC recommends wearing clothing treated with permethrin for tick and mosquito protection. Applied to clothing and gear only, never directly to skin. Provides protection through multiple washes and is especially worth it for wooded or high tick areas.

How to Apply Bug Spray Correctly

The repellent only works if you apply it correctly. A few things worth knowing.

Apply to all exposed skin not covered by clothing. Never apply under clothing. Never spray aerosol directly on the face. Spray onto your hands first then apply carefully avoiding eyes and mouth. For children, apply it yourself. Spray onto your hands first then apply to your child avoiding their eyes, mouth and hands.

Sunscreen goes on first, repellent goes on second. Apply sunscreen to clean dry skin and allow it to absorb before applying repellent. Do not use combo sunscreen and repellent products. The AAP and AAFP advise against these because sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours which leads to over exposure to repellent.

Wash repellent off at the end of the day or when returning indoors. Wash clothing separately if repellent was applied.

My Personal Routine

For everyday moderate risk situations I use Picaridin. OFF! Family Care Picaridin or Sawyer Products 20% Picaridin in pump spray or lotion format, not aerosol.

For the lake house up north in heavily wooded areas during peak tick season I use DEET up to 20 to 30% range. But I typically start with Off! Family Care as its only 7% DEET. If its recently rained or humid, ill go with a higher percentage. The disease risk in those environments is real and I lead with the most effective protection available.

For my daughter's everyday summer use I use Picaridin keeping concentration appropriate for her age. Bracelets and essential oil sprays go on her during very low risk situations like a quick trip to the park on a low mosquito day.

At home I use Mosquito Dunks in the bird bath and rain barrel. I am trying the Mosquito Dunk Bucket in my yard this summer.

This is my personal routine based on my environment and my risk assessment. Yours will look different and that is exactly how it should be.

The Bottom Line

Bug spray is one category where I do not lead with ingredients first. I lead with protection. The diseases carried by mosquitoes and ticks in wooded humid areas across the United States are real and prevention is the primary defense.

Picaridin is the closest thing to a consensus pick across mainstream medicine and cleaner living sources. Effective, well studied, lower toxicity profile than DEET, and recommended by CDC, EPA, AAP, AAFP, and EWG.

DEET remains the most effective option when disease risk is high. Use the lowest effective concentration for your situation and follow label directions.

Essential oils have a role in low risk situations. They are not sufficient for serious disease prevention.

Eliminate standing water. Use Mosquito Dunks. Cover up.

Do better. Not perfect.
